but, right in the middle of the sentence. It seems like the sentence should end after Martha says, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Why? Because her brother, Lazarus, has been dead for four days! But Martha doesn’t put a period there. She puts a comma. Even though her brother is dead and buried, she is still holding out hope. The little phrase “even now” is underlined and circled in my Bible. Even when it seems like God is four days late, it’s too soon to give up. Even
